Frequently asked questions

How is the expected return calculated?

It blends each fund you select by weight, using a long-run nominal (before-inflation) return estimate drawn from the history of the index each fund tracks. It is a planning assumption, not a forecast — markets vary widely year to year.

What does the “today’s dollars” toggle do?

It discounts the projected future value by your inflation rate so you can see roughly what the balance would be worth in today’s purchasing power.

What is the income tax-character breakdown?

While you hold an ETF, its distributions are taxed by character: eligible Canadian dividends, foreign income, interest, or return of capital. The tool shows the blended mix for your portfolio. It is factual income character, not a tax calculation, and only matters in a non-registered (taxable) account.

Are these the real, current fund numbers?

MERs are web-verified; expected returns, drawdowns, geographic mix, and distribution character are estimates and are labelled as such. Always confirm against the provider’s current factsheet before investing.

Is this financial advice?

No. Spudfolio is a free educational tool. It does not account for your personal situation, fees you actually pay, or taxes owed.
